Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 28 oz canned crushed tomatoes preferably San Marzano
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp sugar balances acidity
  • 1 tsp salt adjust to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes optional, for spice
  • 1/2 cup water or vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil chopped

Instructions
 

  • Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add chopped onions and sauté for 2-3 minutes until soft and translucent.
  • Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

  • Add tomato paste and cook for 1 minute to deepen the flavor.
  • Pour in crushed tomatoes and water (or broth), stirring to combine.
  • Season with Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
  • Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add fresh basil, stir, and cook for another 2 minutes before turning off the heat.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, then serve over your favorite pasta.

For a deeper flavor, let the sauce simmer for up to 2 hours. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
